Partial Hospitalization & Day Treatment Programs

True North’s Day Treatment and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) helps with the transition from residential care to Intensive Outpatient (IOP). This two-week stabilization period helps clients become accustomed to having more independence as they ease into IOP. Our Partial Hospitalization Program is also suited for those who are ready to begin their recovery without residential care first.

Day Treatment and Partial Hospitalization is reliant on proven effective modalities, also known as treatment methods. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Experiential Therapy are extremely effective in helping those in recovery manage their often overwhelming emotions. McKay, Wood, and Brantley, three doctors specializing in psychiatry and treating mental health issues, explained the application of DBT in 2007, “Research shows that dialectical behavior therapy strengthens a person’s ability to handle distress without losing control or acting destructively.” This is the key to stabilization in early recovery for many, which is why DBT is one of the most common therapeutic techniques in use today.

Experiential Therapy is a technique employing active movement and forms of expression like art, role-play, acting, guided imagery, and more recreational activities. These activities help clients more freely explore their past emotions and traumatic experiences. At True North, we utilize carefully constructed, individually-customized therapeutic approaches to help our patients internalize and own the skills they learn during their recovery.

Unfortunately, research shows that the majority of relapses occur within the first month of leaving the protective “bubble” of residential treatment. PHP provides a soft landing back into the real world, something they likely haven’t had to face without their substance abuse to lean on. Evidence-based research confirms that stepping from residential treatment to Partial Hospitalization/Day Treatment, followed by Intensive Outpatient Treatment, provides the highest success rates in long-term recovery. PHP teaches patients emotional deregulation and mindfulness, how to tolerate stress and better engage with and maintain relationships. These are crucial skills when reentering one’s life and navigating work, family, and friends.

True North has been a leader in alcohol and drug treatment since 2011, predating the vast majority of San Diego county’s providers. Our facility is formally recognized by the City of San Diego and Cigna Behavioral Healthcare as a preferred program in treating first responders. Our founder, Kansas Cafferty, is an expert in the field of substance use disorder treatment, with over 20 years of experience. He is also a Commissioner and Chairman-Elect to the National Certification Commission of Addiction Professionals at NAADAC.

We at True North strive to provide consistent treatment at every stage of our clients’ recovery, so they’re equipped to identify their triggers, discuss them freely, and explore more effective ways to manage them.
